I Can’t Whistle but My Ears Can
My Story: One thing I wish I had the ability to do is lay my head down on a pillow
without my hearing aids whistling. It’s the little things in life! Hearing aids
have this weird feature where they will whistle if something gets too close,
and the whistling will stop when the close object moves away from my ears. So, something
like laying my head down on a pillow is a simple thing I wish I could enjoy.
Not to mention the level of discomfort of trying to maneuver my head and ears
where the whistling can be somewhat bearable. The whistling also occurs when
hugging someone, wearing headphones and putting a hood over my head. The noise
is a faint sound that I can hear in my ears but those around me can hear it as
well, just not as loud. Sometimes it can be embarrassing when the whistling
starts but I’ve learned that it is part of my everyday life. It’s these small daily tasks that a lot of people take for granted, but someone with a hearing
loss doesn’t get to experience them in a “normal” way.
Here’s a Little Help: If you wear hearing aids and find the whistling a daily struggle, please know that you are not alone. For those who may take the little things for granted, I encourage you to think about the simplest of things like laying your head on a pillow and remember that not everyone can do that… comfortably. There are a lot of things that people with a hearing loss are forced to do differently and this just happens to be one of those.
