Working out and Wearing Hearing Aids
My
Story: For as long as I can remember, I have been a
workout fanatic. I was a college athlete and now I continue to work out daily.
This is a part of my life, and it helps me release stress. However, sweating is
something that irritates my ears. Naturally, any physical activity comes with
sweat. While working out, I build up sweat inside of my
ears and it causes my ears to feel uncomfortable with my hearing aids in
them. The main issue is that the sweat is unable to come out of my
ear because of my hearing aids blocking them. Essentially, the
hearing aids fill up with moisture which often requires me to replace
the ear wax filter sooner than anticipated. While working out, I
often find myself removing my hearing aids and quickly cleaning out the
moisture due to irritation. Hearing aids are devices that can break if they get
wet, so sweat is something that I am extremely cautious of. Some
people might say, “why don’t you remove your hearing aids while working out?”. Ideally,
that might sound like a good suggestion, but my hearing is a major
sense that I would be lacking. Without my aids, I cannot hear anything
and that makes me feel anxious. I wish there were options for low-cost waterproof
hearing aids. Maybe technology will get to that point some day!
Here’s a Little Help: If you are someone who works out or sweat in your ears, I would suggest always having an extra set of ear wax filters with you. I also encourage you to be confident in removing your aids for a short second to clean out your ears. It truly makes all the difference when the moisture is removed. Honestly, anything to make you feel better about your hearing! It helped me, maybe it will help you!
