My Why

Hi! I am Lyndsey and this is my personal blog about my journey with hearing loss. I was diagnosed with severe bilateral hearing loss at the age of three, which means that I wear in-the-ear hearing aids in both ears to function daily. Back in the early 90’s hearing tests were not done on newborns, which is why I was not truly diagnosed as hearing impaired until three years old... mind blowing right! Luckily, hearing tests are now standard for newborns and children. This allows them to be diagnosed early on. So, if you are already doing the math that put me three years behind in developing hearing and speech skills. With that being said, I have experienced a lot and overcame many hurdles in my life, and I want to share what has helped me in the hopes that it might help you too.

Did you know that 90% of deaf people are born to hearing parents? Think about that for minute…90 percent! Naturally, parents are immediately lost in how to help their child because they are experiencing something they’ve never dealt with before. An adult who randomly loses their hearing one day may feel like their entire life has been flipped upside down. A family member who is struggling to communicate with a loved one with hearing loss may feel helpless. My goal is to motivate the parents, adults, children, or individuals who are a part of the hearing impaired community or experiencing hearing loss any form. You are not alone. My hope is to educate and encourage the different things WE can do as a part of this community. I am not an expert in all things hearing impaired related, but I know what I have been through and what has helped me! We have the benefit of being creative and resourceful in our everyday lives, and that’s simply the beauty of being who we are!

You might be thinking “how is this blog is any different than other hearing-impaired support groups or blogs?” and that is a wonderful question! I like to think that each of us have the ability to be innovative and unique in our way. We are all capable of figuring things out and navigating life in ways that work for us! With hearing loss, there are natural setbacks that are not officially recognized, and hands-on resources are not always available. I look forward to sharing my tips and tricks, identify what works for me, educate on what is available, promote products that have made a difference in my life, and present all of the amazing opportunities that you have by being in a part of this community! I would love to hear from you and what you think could benefit all of us as well. Please do not hesitate to contact me. If this blog helps just one person, my mission here is complete! Enjoy!
